I spoke too soon!

I was so excited this week, because for the first time in quite a few weeks I didn't have to take anybody to a doctor appointment. It has been a regular occurance with my parents. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I was just excited that I didn't have to this week. Unfortunately, on Wednesday night just after midnight my sweet little PB&J ran to the bathroom with the adverse effects of a bad case of the stomach flu. Also unfortunately, she didn't quite make it and left a trail through the bathroom. We were up ALL night. Now, when I say "we" I mean she and I. My sweet Hero was in Mexico on a business trip. Somehow he always misses the fun stuff! So, on Friday after she was feeling better, I spent the entire day disinfecting the bathrooms, washing sheets, etc., etc. Then on Friday night at about midnight when I was getting ready for bed it hit again. Only it was ME this time. Lucky for me, my Hero got back a few hours before it hit. (He was a little upset that I had kissed him when he got home!) I was so mad that I had just cleaned the toilet only hours before, but with my head in it I found myself somewhat grateful. There was a point where I was afraid I would die, and then another when I was afraid I wouldn't!!! Anyway, I'm feeling much better, but my Hot Ham and Cheese came down with it Saturday morning, and the other 3 people in the house are hiding out in their rooms and constantly cleaning every surface with Clorox wipes! So, needless to say, I think I would rather have taken my parents to 5 doctor appointments. I won't cheer so loudly next time.

The Supreme

I was just checking out my face book page and seeing what all my great friends are doing. I was thinking about how lucky I am to have such great friends! They are my "supreme". I have so many friends with so much diversity among them, but all together it makes a wonderful combination. I am so grateful for my "supreme" friends. Thanks to all of you for making my life so much better!

Keeping momma happy!

I forgot a friend's birthday last week, and seeing how money is tight I decided to make her something. I LOVE to create. My two favorite things to do are paper crafting, and quilting. I spent my evening making a little gift, and after I was done I felt great. There is just something about creativity that rejuvenates me and gives me that little boost I need to keep going. There is a twinge of guilt when I take the time to do it, but I guess the laundry and dishes will still be there tomorrow! And it's all right that my kids ate Top Ramen for dinner. I'm happy and you know what they say..."If momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!"

This is the gift for my friend. It's a set of gift cards.

These are some of my favorite quilts that I've made.

hero sandwich - a large sandwich made of a long crusty roll split lengthwise and filled with meats and cheese.
I may have been a little hasty in naming my sweet husband a "hero". According to the definition it is made of a long crusty roll. He is anything but crusty! In fact he is quite a softy...maybe more like a potato roll!

This weekend we had the opportunity to attend our niece's wedding. It was really beautiful. At the breakfast all four parents took a few minutes to speak to the couple. It was very touching and there were a lot of moist eyes in the crowd. My sweet hero turned to me and said, "Okay, it's official...our kids can't get married. If they do, you can't ask me to speak, sing, or anything else! Just stick me in a corner with a box of kleenex." I laughed, but I was so touched at how much he loves and adores our kids.

Thinking out loud

Tonight I have a few questions:
Question #1 - Why is it that a woman who has spent her entire life trying to have a healthy self-esteem can seem to feel so bad about herself after ONE sentence from a teenager? (ie. Mom, you look funny. Mom, you are so old-fashioned. Mom, you are soooo embarrassing! etc.)
Question #2 - Why is it that hours after I actually take the time to really scour the kitchen floor, someone feels the need to spill something extremely sticky over as much of the floor as possible?
Question #3 - How is it possible that 8 ounces of hot chocolate can make it into a kitchen drawer, refrigerator, stove, counter top, mini-blinds, and said floor all in a split second?
Question #4 - Who is this Ida Know person and how much damage can I do when I get my hands on him/her?
And finally after taking my father to the proctologist on Friday I have a BIG Question #5 - What kind of person chooses this profession and why?

What's in a name?

Wow! This is a little intimidating. I've been putting this first post off because I had no idea how to start this whole "blog thing"! It's like opening a book and usually from the first chapter you know if you are hooked or if you're going to have to wade your way through it. I don't want anyone to feel like they are wading through my ramblings.

I guess first I should introduce you to my family. Since the title for my blog is "The Sandwich Years" I've decided to go with a theme...sandwiches!
First I am married to a wonderful man. He is just plain good. He is one of the most honest and hard-working people I know and I am so thankful to have him in my life. He will be referred to as Hero (get it? Hero sandwich?)
Our oldest son is almost 20 and is serving our country in the United States Air Force. We are so proud of him!!! Since he is my only boy, I couldn't decide between a few. Some options were Sloppy Joe, Po' Boy, and Reuben. Reuben won, because the others just didn't fit.
Next we have our 18 year-old daughter. She attended BYU last year and did very well, and has moved back home for a semester to save some money. I've named her Hot Ham and Cheese first because she is hot, second, she's a bit of a ham, and third, she always has a big "cheesy" smile on her beautiful face!
Next we have Philly. Philly is 15 1/2. Yes, the 1/2 is important, especially since she will be driving when the next 1/2 is up. When I think of Philly, I tend to think more of a race horse than a sandwich, which is why I picked it for her. She doesn't sit still much, and there is never a dull moment when she's around.
Next is my 13-year-old. She is a fashionista. We have named her French dip. It's more for the "French" than for the "Dip" :-) It sounded somewhat exotic.
Last, but certainly not least, we have PB&J - Positively Beautiful and Joyful! She is 8 years old and is a ray of sunshine in our home.
For the past 2 days we have spent so much time trying to decide who's name was going to be what. The kids wanted to know what my name would be. Apparently I am the "Big Cheese". Maybe I should call myself the Club and I might get a little more respect! But alas, I am the Big Cheese...a title I proudly accept.
